Acupuncture
Acupuncture, which is part of Traditional Chinese medicine, is the insertion of very fine needles into the skin to promote health and well-being. By stimulating the acupuncture points, signals are sent to the brain to release and restore functions in the body. From a Chinese medical perspective, it is the Qi (life force/energy) that becomes regulated from the stimulation. The aim of the treatment is to support the body's own healing ability. Chinese medicine and acupuncture focus on treating the individual - therefore, two peolpe with the same problem would most likely receive different treatments because they are two different people.
Acupuncture has been practised for around 3000 years. It is a very safe and relaxing treatment. Alongside acupuncture, cupping (suction cups) and moxibustion (a smouldering herb held close to the skin) may be used to reach desired effect.
What happens during a treatment
When you come for your first session, you will have a detailed consultation with me. I will then take your pulse and look at your tongue. The findings will form the basis for your treatment plan and point choice. 5-15 needles will be inserted, depending on the problem. The needles will be left in place for about 30-40 min, and believe it or not, it is a truly relaxing experience.
A course of treatments consists of 6-10 sessions, usually on a weekly basis. Depending on the individual and the problem sometimes less or more may be needed.
Traditional Chinese medicine is a complete medical system and as such, aims to treat a wide variety of conditions. See the Research section for more info or e-mail/call Magdalena, who will be happy to answer your queries.
