Welcome to my Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine Practice!
Over the last 25 years, I have had the privilege of building a thriving practice that has enabled me to help individuals overcome a variety of health challenges. I graduated from my TCM Acupuncture training (Bsc Hons.) in 2002 and then continued to do a MSc in Chinese Herbal Medicine a few years later.
My approach as an acupuncturist and herbalist centers around treating a wide range of conditions, including anxiety, arthritis, digestive issues, insomnia, hormonal imbalances, migraines, musculoskeletal pain, skin conditions like acne and eczema, as well as stress, fertility, and gynecological concerns, including pregnancy-related issues. However, the beauty of Chinese Medicine is that it is a comprehensive medical system, and the possibilities for healing extend far beyond this list!
For the past two decades, my practice has flourished in Islington, central London and Whitstable. However, I’ve recently made the difficult decision to leave the London clinic and to focus my practice on Whitstable, Herne Bay, and Broadstairs, conveniently located for clients from Margate, Ramsgate and Canterbury. Therefore, from January 2025, I will have additional availability and flexibility in East Kent.
As a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I firmly believe in the uniqueness of each individual. I understand that no two people are alike, even when symptoms may appear similar. This philosophy informs my tailored treatment plans, which may include acupuncture, herbal remedies, tuning forks, cupping, massage and talking therapy - all designed to meet your specific needs.
I prefer the term Complementary Medicine over alternative medicine, as I strive to integrate seamlessly with Western medical treatments. Whether using Chinese medicine exclusively or in tandem with other therapies, my goal is to provide the most holistic approach to your health.
Thank you for considering my practice. If this sounds like it would be what you are looking for please get in touch. I am happy to offer free 10-15 min discover calls . 🍀

"I was really nervous about the needles at first but Magdalena's calm and reassuring manner put me instantly at ease....and, I could hardly feel the needles at all. I also felt very relaxed afterwards" Kim
"After a course of acupuncture and Chinese herbs, my acne has completely cleared. As a bonus I also sleep much better and I feel less anxious and stressed. Thanks Magdalena!" Sonia
Let's take a look at ... ...
ANXIETY AND MENTAL-EMOTIONAL WELLBEING.
Each month I'll be taking a closer look at a particular health problem . This month, I will be delving into the issues anxiety and mental-emotional wellbeing
🍀Acupuncture and Chinese medicine (TCM) have a long history of being used to address anxiety, stress, and mental health conditions. While research is still evolving, many people report benefits, and there is a growing body of evidence supporting their role in holistic mental health care. Here’s a structured overview:
- In TCM, anxiety and related disorders are often understood as imbalances in Qi (vital energy), blood, yin-yang, and organ systems, particularly:
- Heart: governs the mind (Shen). Disturbance leads to restlessness, insomnia, palpitations.
- Liver: regulates the smooth flow of Qi. Stagnation can cause irritability, mood swings, depression.
- Spleen: related to overthinking and worry.
- Kidney: linked to fear and insecurity.
- Treatment aims to restore balance using acupuncture, herbal medicine, lifestyle practices, and sometimes Tai Chi.
- Acupuncture stimulates points along meridians to regulate Qi and calm the Shen (spirit).
- Common acupuncture points for anxiety and stress:
- Yintang (Hall of Impression): calming, reduces worry.
- Shenmen (HT-7): nourishes the Heart, calms the mind.
- Neiguan (PC-6): relieves palpitations, anxiety.
- Sanyinjiao (SP-6): balances emotions and sleep.
- Research evidence:
- Studies suggest acupuncture may modulate the autonomic nervous system, reducing sympathetic (“fight-or-flight”) activity and enhancing parasympathetic (“rest-and-digest”) response.
- Research trials show reductions in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), depression, and insomnia symptoms.
Herbal formulas are tailored to patterns diagnosed in TCM, such as:
-
- Liver Qi stagnation → Xiao Yao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder).
- Heart yin deficiency (restlessness, insomnia) → Suan Zao Ren Tang (Sour Jujube Decoction).
- Phlegm-damp obstruction (brain fog, heaviness, depression) → Ban Xia Hou Po Tang.
- Modern research has found that some herbs may influence neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, though safety and standardization are key
- TCM often integrates breathing practices, Qigong, meditation, and dietary therapy, which can complement psychotherapy and medication.
- The holistic focus emphasizes stress reduction, lifestyle balance, and emotional regulation.
Summary:
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can support anxiety and mental health by regulating the nervous system, calming the Shen, and restoring organ balance. Evidence suggests benefits for anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Psychotherapy, medications (where appropriate) and lifestyle interventions may further be necessary depending on each individual’s symptoms and circumstances. I would always ensure there is space to talk through and explore the issues and concerns to facilitate and better understand the client’s needs. However, it is also possible to work on a ‘non-disclosure’ basis if that is preferred. My treatments are person-centred and client-lead.
